You mentioned an American referring to "south Toronto". It made me think, why is there no "south Toronto"?

Is it because Toronto's downtown is at its south end, near Lake Ontario? If you defined the "centre" of Toronto as being its downtown, then "south Toronto" would be out in the middle of Lake Ontario.

However, relative to Toronto's geometric centroid, the south end of Toronto would be its downtown. So, the American referring to "south Toronto" is correct in a technical sense.

Still, by referring to "south Toronto", this guy sounds like a joke.

Well, and by the same reasoning Jeremy and I live in "north Ottawa."

...and I don't mean Gatineau :)
